In a recent Gallup poll, it was reported that many Americans aren’t content with their jobs and would eagerly walk if given a viable alternative. To the telemarketers, asphalt workers, and toll booth operators of the world, this was not earth shattering news.
Over the past five years, most occupations – white collar and blue – have been affected by cutbacks, pay cuts, furloughs, increased workload and fewer perks. Gallop reports that, as a result, fewer employees are committed to their job, have a sense of purpose and feel loyalty to their employer.
In fact, Gallup’s latest survey found that only 30 percent of workers – 33 percent in Florida – are engaged. Yikes! That means 70 percent would rather be watching grumpy cat videos, updating their Twitter feed (#myjobstinks), or looking for careers opportunities on LinkedIn than focusing on how to best represent and enhance their employer’s brand.
According to Gallop, employees’ lack of loyalty to their workplace is enormously expensive – estimating that the 30 percent of workers who are “actively disengaged” cost the U.S. up to $550 billion a year in lost productivity.
